The Children’s Deaths Are on You
On February 28th, 2017 President Trump signed a bill into law which rolled back an Obama initiative aimed at keeping people with mental illness from buying guns. Yesterday afternoon a teenager who had been expelled came back on campus with an AR-15 assault rifle and killed 17 people. Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz wounded another fourteen people. Five of those have life-threatening wounds. Nikolas had been treated for mental illness but stopped his treatment. He had bought the AR-115 legally from a local gun shop.
President Trump tweeted the following the day of the shooting. “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.” Today he followed with, “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!” Too bad you saw fit to roll back a requirement that would have actually kept Nikolas from his purchase. The student’s lives were worth a tweet, but not appearing on television to address the nation.
According to CBS News, the White House refused to release the photo of Trump signing the bill that might have saved these children’s lives. They said that they made the request twelve times. As if that wasn’t enough, President Trump has either cut or is in the process of cutting funding for treatment of mental illnesses. So you, on one hand, are making it easier to get guns, on the other creating more people inclined to use them for massacres.
