The Oath
The President isn’t the only one who takes an oath. Representatives and Senators upon taking office must swear, “I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God” (5 U.S.C. §3331).
Sir Edmund Burke a very wise philosopher who was deeply involved in the political world of England, France, and the birth of our nation. He made a quotation that applies to every aspect of life. All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. I have no doubt that most of the Republicans in this Congress, and particularly the Senators will be viewed as responsible for letting Trump’s autocratic ambitions run wild. They will be seen as the people of good conscience who did nothing.
